Maria Montessori

Maria Montessori was an Italian physician, educator, and innovator, acclaimed for her educational method that builds on the way children learn naturally.

Maria Montessori opened the first school – the Casa dei Bambini, also known as Children's Horse – In Rome on January 6,1907. Subsequently, she travelled the world and wrote extensively about her approach to education, attracting many devotees. This is how thousands of Montessori schools were developed in many countries worldwide. In Fact, one of the first Montessori schools in America, was opened in Washington D.C. in 1912 by Alexander Graham Bell and his wife Mabel.

“When a child is given a little leeway, he will shout, ‘I want to do it!’ But in our schools, which have an environment adapted to children’s needs, they say, ‘ Help me to do it alone,’ ”
The secret of Childhood – Maria Montessori
"The greatest gift we can give our children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence"

Dr. Maria Montessori

Dr. Maria Montessori observed that children’s minds from birth to the of age 6 are absorbent like a sponge, the young child experiences a period of intense mental activity that allows the child to “absorb” learning from his or her environment without conscious effort, naturally and spontaneously.

Maria Montessori  recognized that in the first six years of a child’s life is vital to their human development.  Children are able to absorb specific things at specific times which she called the sensitive period. During the Sensitive Period the child has a window of opportunity to learn specific concepts, and they are highly drawn to experience that will allow them to develop these concepts and skills. A child who misses this window of opportunity will not be able to reclaim it. Therefore, providing a prepared and thought about learning environment is imperative to ensure that all children are successful during their sensitive period of learning.

Our Montessori educators, act as guides, preparing and enhancing a learning environment where children are free to roam and explore areas of interest and develop skills at their own pace. Every child is on their own learning path and has their own curriculum as well as, aim to meet each child's individual sensitive periods.
