The secret of Childhood, Maria Montessori

Dr. Maria Montessori

Maria Montessori was an Italian physician, educator, and innovator, acclaimed for developing an educational method built entirely around the way children learn naturally. Her approach was not theoretical. It was observational. She watched children. She studied them. And what she discovered transformed early childhood education around the world.

On January 6, 1907, Maria Montessori opened her first school in Rome — the Casa dei Bambini, also known as the Children's House. It was the beginning of a global movement. She travelled the world, wrote extensively about her approach to education, and attracted devoted educators and families who saw firsthand what authentic Montessori learning could do for young children.

The reach of her work was extraordinary. Thousands of Montessori schools were established in countries around the world. One of the first Montessori schools in America was opened in Washington D.C. in 1912 by Alexander Graham Bell and his wife Mabel.

Her words speak for themselves. In The Secret of Childhood, Maria Montessori wrote that children in a prepared environment do not demand to act alone out of frustration — they ask to be helped to do it themselves. That single insight sits at the heart of everything we do at Guiding Minds Montessori in Headingley.
